I'd never read any of Orwell's books until the past year. I can't remember any of them even being on a reading list in school. But I wasn't exactly the best student, so who knows? If you haven't read Animal Farm, I highly suggest it. (Maybe even reread it). It's quick and easy.
Regardless of Orwell's political views (or mine or yours), it's a fascinating read. Orwell spells out the promises and failures of communism without calling it communism.
One of my takeaways (there are many) is if we believe that a political system/politician or the promises of that system and its leaders will take care of us from "cradle to grave" without worries ...we will be disappointed (at the very least). The world has a history of leaders of every ilk with good or bad intentions that fail us. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Our ultimate happiness and fulfillment won't be found there.
